The Story of Hong Kong – Chapter 1: Introducing the “Tai Po Heritage and Historical Trail” Walking Tour
About the Tour
In this roughly 3 ½ hours tour, you will walk back to the old days of Tai Po, and you will be fascinated to know all just not about Tai Po, in fact, you will get to know all about the story of Hong Kong. As Tai Po was where the British Hong Kong Government chose to put the British Flag up in a small hill, the Flagstaff Hill today that you are going to visit it in this walking tour, in the process of claiming the right to extent a 99 years lease of a New Territories that accounts for over 900 square kilometres, the then newly added land north of the Boundary Street to south of the Shenzhen River together with 235 outlying islands from Chinese Ching Dynasty in the year 1898.
You are going to visit the first New Territories Police Station built in 1899, that should be the first building ever built by the British Hong Kong Government in the New Territories.
You will visit the first New Territories Government Offices Building built in 1906.
You will see the first Hong Kong Government School in the New Territories built in 1952.
You will see the pathway where dead bodies and cut-off heads of the local guerilla, who fought against the Japanese invasion during the WWII, were carted to the dumping ground (massacre grave).
You will also find out how the Old Tai Po market and the New Tai Po Market were established, with a story linking to the oldest Indigenous Family in Hong Kong , the Tang Family (1060 years in the New Territories) and the other two 800 years old Indigenous Families, the Man Family and the Pang Family) and together with the Hakka Families in the New Territories.
If you are a museum person, you will like this walking tour.
And if you like old local Hong Kong stories, I am sure you will like this walking tour.
You might wonder how you will get to know all about Tai Po and all about Hong Kong, just in around 3-½ hours, and perhaps we can sit down in a Hon Kong style café (cha Chaan Tang) for a Yuen Yeung - "Mandarin Ducks" (coffee & tea mix drink)), that is only available and unique to Hong Kong, and keep going on with your questions to ask me more about our cultures, our food and more local habits and history.
You are going to walk into original sites where some indigenous families first settled in Hong Kong. You also have a chance to expose yourself to their past stories and you are going to be right there in their living ground today to witness how these indigenous people are still sustaining their old cultural ways and values in their present living.
Some of the tour stops in this tour are never before seen in any other tour itineraries in Hong Kong, that means you are among the first ones to visit these places and you can keep your own private tour journals base on your own experiences of the indigenous families visit in Hong Kong.
You are going to see some of the oldest buildings that still exist which you can create your own record of them, as they will vanish very soon in the near future.
And you are never too late to start your journey of knowing more about Hong Kong.
