30 Houses: A Hidden Neighbourhood Within Central
About the Tour
These days, we see trendy bars and eateries in Hong Kong’s SOHO district. However, it is also home to all sorts of hidden gems, and one such treasure is "30 Houses, a historic neighbourhood in Central". There resides an active community of “gaifongs” (local residents) who are still heavily involved in fostering the community.
Gough Street – Kau U Fong quarter The eclectic mix of buildings in the Gough Street - Kau U Fong area is an attraction in itself. Have you noticed that many "tong lau" (tenement buildings) have ’shrunken’ upper floors? This architectural feature of the 1960s to 1980s — imposed by the now defunct ’Street Shadow Regulation’ — ensured sunlight reached street level. At sunset, head to the alley behind Kau U Fong to Godenya, an award-winning sake-pairing omakase restaurant.
Yuen Kut Lam - This company was founded by current manager Yuen Yue Lum’s great-great-grandfather in Guangzhou, in 1835. Mr Yuen believes his is the last company making tea this way in Hong Kong.
